Riven Stump
Riven Stump is only the second in the new series. Large and more colorful than the first ‘Untitled Stump’, and also portraying the remnants of a logged cedar tree but this time one that is much older.
I was looking here for a color study with the fungus, moss, and red rot of a cedar stump all coming into play. The deep split in the side gives the piece it’s name. Also, this stump has the decaying evidence of a springboard notch, still clearly showing. I love the story-telling quality these notches convey when old growth stumps are found while hiking in the Washington Cascades, near to Seattle where I live.
The copious use of acrylic texture was an experiment on this one.
Materials: Rough cut fir scraps, brass brads, birch plywood (base), with acrylic paints, stains, light weight molding paste and dead flat varnish.
