Wild Turkey Tail Feather - Southern Oregon

Hawk Feather - R Williamson; digital sketch; 7/20

Road trips that take you through miles of grass fields and chaparral bring with them greater chances to see hunting raptors. And originally when I made this post, I had thought that this was a Red-Tailed Hawk feather. But someone who knew better corrected me on Instagram; instead it’s from the tail of a wild turkey. It had presented itself while I was walking in the madrone woods that cover the hills above Jacksonville, Oregon. We had seen a large flock of them scurrying through some domestic shrubbery on the same day, so it seems like a good fit. Beautiful banding ending with a warm buff tip.
