Chanterelle 3
This new painting on old window glass is the first of this type that I’ve done in a while. In this case, a commission for a fellow who works as an assistant for one of the other artists on my same floor. While I’ve done several earlier chanterelles as part of a series on culinary fungi, this is the first that I’ve been happy with.
The timing is good for this commission as I’m currently reading ‘Entangled Life’, a fascinating book by Merlin Sheldrake. The long subtitle shows where he’s coming from - ‘How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures’. A lot of territory there.
He mentions the chanterelle in passing, counting it among some of the many prized culinary fungi that have yet to be successfully domesticated because of the ‘fluidity of their relationships with plants, and on part because of the intricacies of their sex lives’.
