Art Deco Screen inspired by Eileen Gray

Two samples used to compare color and types of silver leaf (composition and genuine silver)

I’m currently working in incremental steps on a project for Ore Studios. One of their residential clients is a collector of classic Art Deco from the 20’s and expressed interest in having a wall installation based on an early work of Anglo-Irish architect/designer Eileen Gray. The folding screen by Gray is considered one of her masterworks, created in her studio in Paris in the early 1920’s and utilizing her intense love of Japanese lacquerwork technique. It recently changed hands at a Sothebys auction selling for an eye-popping figure north of two million dollars.

This piece will be more modest in terms of materials but will tap the same design language that she used for the geometric linework that distinguishes her original piece. The intention is to construct it of mdf panels, routing the design with the help of a CNC machine. At this current stage, we comparing base colors and a few different types of silver leaf.

Final installation expected in early May and photos will be posted at that time.
